Emmaus Instructors in Uruguay

South America Today

 Ø

South America is a land of many tribes and tribal languages, some of which are still unknown to the outside world.

 Ø

The vast majority of South Americans speak either Portuguese (Brazil) or Spanish (most of the rest). They live in some of the biggest cities in the world that continue to grow far beyond the capacity of their infrastructures.

 Ø

In some South American countries, a new wave of socialism, one that is moving to return to their indigenous roots is replacing violent terrorism, communism-sponsored revolutionary forces, and dictatorships. Anti-western sentiment is common in many. Some are now models of democracy.

 Ø

South America is wide open to the gospel, and the evangelical church is growing quickly in most countries.

 Ø

The foreign missionary force is disappearing. It is being replaced by national leadership which is in great need of strong Bible teaching and Bible study tools like Emmaus courses.
Ø Emmaus courses have been used in many South American countries for over 50 years.

A Key Help for the South American Church – Emmaus Bible Courses

Emmaus courses are well-suited to this culture because they are written at the perfect educational level for (a) the South American who is seeking the truth and (b) the believer learning to study God’s Word for him or herself. The South American style of education is not analytical in nature, but the concise, dynamic teaching method of Emmaus courses promotes confidence in the student that, whether they study individually or in small groups, God is teaching each one directly.

Emmaus courses provide a Bible-Institute education for those who cannot, for whatever the reason, attend a Bible school fulltime. Not only are the 40 courses each very affordable, their cumulative teaching gives any serious Christian a strong foundation for his knowledge of the Lord and His Word. The courses, which are like commentaries in format, make useful reference tools for the believer to keep for future ministry and service preparation.

The ECS Courses Work!
Here's Living Proof . . .

If you were to visit Bogotá, Colombia on May 1

(a holiday there), you would find about 120 church leaders and their wives meeting all day to study God’s Word in-depth instead of going on a picnic.

The Emmaus Bible School in Bogotá, which has almost 1,000 students enrolled, puts on this conference at which they pick one of our 40 courses in Spanish to study. Four or five lectures are given on the topic of the course, interspersed with discussion sessions. Each student then takes home a copy of the Emmaus course, studies it through for themselves, and then completes the exam booklet for final correction.

Can you imagine the effect we have seen over the years as believers have learned to study, understand and live by the doctrine of Scripture for themselves? Our International Coordinator was a missionary there for 16 years and started the Emmaus Bible School which offers formal classes on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings to over 100 students, as well as those who study the distance-education courses. At first he and other missionaries were the professors. Now it is totally administered and taught by Colombians. That is the power of God’s Word! The church in Colombia is developing its own leadership.
